Question 7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

What was the preliminary task and what were its main aims?

A preliminary task is a task that is done before the filming of your ideal clip, it’s supposed to help you get used to using a camera, it helps you understand how to set up a camera and handle it when using it. This then gives people an opportunity to play around with camera shots and angles. When the filming has been done, we are also able to gain experience in the editing side and learn different editing techniques and familiarize ourselves.

Improvements in filming and editing

There has been many improvements in our filming techniques and editing techniques as we have discovered many new styles of editing and filming, I am now much more confident and used to the use of a camera, as we have used a variety of shots, angles and movements. in the preliminary we used mostly a high angle but in the actual product we tried our best to use a variety of high angles and low angles we used it when the character is running down the stairs we wanted the camera and the audience to be focused on the characters body movement to see her reaction to what she was going through.

In our preliminary editing was rarely seen as all we did was add a fade to black, we then decided that for our final product we couldn't simply just use a fade to black, so we decided to use more transactions and effects, we were able to add this effect on this scene to add to the possessed atmosphere and aura. This was effective because we were able to make it look natural, but also it would affect the audience making them feel aware on the things that were to happen next.

We also learnt how to add loads of different little clips together, to make one clip and add fast motions adding excitement to the product and plot, we learnt how to do this due to final cut pro, we were not able to do that on our preliminary task.

Preliminary and Final

In our preliminary task we tried to use a close up, but as we were still inexperienced with the use of the camera so we didn't really get the whole face in the camera, when it was time for us to do close up shots during the filming of our productions we were able to get it right in the frame due to our previous practice with the camera.

We also tried to use more of a point of view, to make the audience feel like they were the ones experiencing it, in our preliminary task we were lacking a point of view shot, so it was important that we put this into our main product, so that our audience will be able to relate with the character.

In hindsight from the preliminary:
From my preliminary task, we realized as a group that we should have been more organized in the planning side, as planning is the most essential thing as it ensures that we are following all conventions, by our use of the camera and our editing ideas. When thinking of how to organize ourselves better we then created pre-production paperwork, a shot list and a storyboard. Which helped us with the roles that we were playing  in the group. This helped us to improve with our production.

Areas I feel I have progressed the most are:
-filming with more confidence and stability
-I can frame my shots better
-I can use and capture different type of cinematography
-I can use cinematography to create meaning for my audience.
-I can use more editing effects
-I can use more editing transitions
-I can use final cut pro with more confidence
-I can create a soundtrack and include sound with images better
 Personal reflection:
Overall I believe that our group even though we have encountered some difficulties, we have made a somewhat appropriate thriller. We have created a very exciting narrative which will be interesting to the audience, due to the recent events that have been mentioned on the news. I have engaged in new tasks and skills which I believe are very beneficial to the new developing media work and being able to research, plan and create my own product has been a very satisfying task.
