Reaserch- Mise En Scene;setting and iconograhy- Miss Begum

what are setting and iconography and why is it an important convention? How can it help with an audience understanding?

Setting- Setting would be the place or type of surroundings where the film would take place. setting is an important convention because it creates a lot of different connotations, meaning feelings and denotations based on the setting, such as the location and how it looks. For example If a movie was to be set in an abandoned house, this would make the audience understand the kind of genre it is and make the audience have different connotations  just by looking at the surroundings. This would help the audience to in a way be prepared for what would happen next and have different ideas and thoughts roaming through their mind, even though the denotation of it is just an abandoned house.

Iconography- Iconography is known as the object or prop used in the scene, it causes meaning to the scene. iconography is an important convention to thriller because it assists into creating different connotations and denotations in Thrillers.Iconography is the objects that cause significant to the scene. an example would be if the protagonist was holding a gun this would make the audience understand the intentions and actions of the protagonist, and the connotations would be murder. Due to this iconography the audience would be expecting something bad to happen in the future whilst  that specific iconography is in the scene, such as the murder of someone etc. this would help to create tension towards the audience as they will be expecting to see something  bad to happen even though the denotation of it is just a gun.

Settings- what are the typical thriller settings and why?
The typical thriller settings would be...
  • An old abandoned house- The connotations coming from the viewers would be haunted, isolated, spirits and ghosts, due to the connotations that would come from the audience it would help create fear towards the audience and keep them alert and also make them feel uncomfortable. this will also cause the audience to have bad ideas about the future of that film like something would happen. but when looking at it from the denotation  point of view it would just be an old abandoned house.
  • An isolated  Forest, the connotations from the audience of this location would be scary, mysterious, dangerous. This would helps to make the audience to make different ideas on their mind and think of all the bad things that could possibly happen in this place such as murder, rape, kidnapping. this would create a frightening response from the audience. but denotations wise it would only be an isolated forest .

Setting and sub-genres
Setting would also be picked due on the sub-genre of the film so that it would make sense to the film

action thriller
In action thrillers the settings would be suburban areas, roads, banks, underground etc....

Crime Thrillers
would be set I suburban areas, city, banks, hospitals, run down areas etc...

sci-fi thrillers
spaceships, forests, hospitals, laboratories, etc...

psychological thrillers
someone's house, hospital,alleyways etc...

Analyse a scene

The scene that I am going to analyse would be the fighting scene between batman and bane on what seems like their first encounter on The dark knight rises, In this scene we can see that it is being set in what looks like an underground area, making the viewer feel aware of all the dangers that could happen underground such as murder, the setting already would create an alert response from the audience the connotations from the audience would be murder, kidnapping etc. The iconography that is mostly being shown is the gun that the guards are holding which would bring tension from the audience automatically making them think that something bad is going to happen such as someone getting shot, but as we know the denotation is just the gun.

Conclusion
 - All the information and research above has helped me to develop an understanding of how setting and iconography could creates different connotations and denotations towards the audience. The type of setting I'm planning to use are street, houses, and if im able alleyways. the type of iconography that I want to use would be blood and some kind of weapons.

    1. A much better post from you here Marlyn, a better reflection of your ability. Settings and iconography discussed in good detail in terms of denotations, connotations and audience response.

      To improve;
-the way you analyse setting and sub-genres of thrillers, to the same for iconography. You can bullet point these with the odd image
