Evaluation- Question 5 - How did you attract/adress your target audience?

How did you attract/ address your target audience?

The importance of secondary research into existing films.
Of course before we could make the thriller we had to start from the basic which meant we had to do secondary research, meaning we had to look for inspiration and information that might help us with the thriller that we where making, the importance in secondary research is that it allows to clarify the research focus, this helps because we are able to look at other films that relate to our idea, look at what the audience response to the film was and see how we can also try and get that same response.

I believe that the target audience for my thriller was.
Its almost traditional, to have a low key lighting, changes in the camera angles and fast camera movements, in all thrillers as it adds excitement to the plot, I made sure that in my thriller there was quick camera movements, changes in the positions of the camera and also most of our scenes where shot where the lighting was low-key to add a bit more, tension. I ma/de sure to do this because I wanted the audience to get the full effect and I wanted the audience to feel, sympathetic towards the protagonist, the emotion that I mostly wanted the audience to feel was anticipation for what was going to happen next, I also wanted them to keep engaged with the thriller. of course due to the questionnaires that I took I was well aware of what the audience was expecting and what their ideal thriller was so I tried to work hand in hand with the results that I got from the questionnaire and also with the secondary research that I previously did, to come up with a product of satisfaction.

The thriller audience enjoyed in terms of conventions and emotions and how did I ensure that I was following these conventions in order to address a similar target audience and their expectations.

I think that the target audience of our thriller film was, mostly older teenagers and young adults, as our thriller was created to trigger the mind and make people think, we think that if the audience was a bit younger then they would have been a bit confused and not really understood what was going on and if it was an older audience they wouldn't have been affected in the way that we wanted. So our target audience was of people between the age of 15-25, We mostly tried to make sure that the thriller was mostly targeted to the female audience as they are most likely able to relate to the protagonist as she is also a female, the ethnicity would vary as the event that happen in the thriller, are something that all females can relate to, but as the thriller is based on a true story, which recently happened in the UK I would say that the white females in the audience would most likely feel somewhat personal. As the thriller is a psychological thriller, I would think that most of the audience would be interested in psychology and as our targeted audience is at an age where they would probably be still be in education, such as secondary, college or university I wanted the people that where interested in
psychology to be attracted to this film.

What audience did I  want to attract with my thriller?

Why I carried out a questionnaire and why this was important to do so

During the time in which I was finding some secondary research I was also doing research of my own which included me having to do a questionnaire that helped me acquire all the information that was needed from people in which I wanted my target audience to be part of, as I previously said making a questionnaire helped me because It allowed me to come feel personal with the audience, allowing me to know what they enjoyed in thrillers, what kind of thrillers they most likely watched and what their expectations where. This helped me create a product that will attract and please them.

Four key questions that I asked to help me make key decisions to ensure that I were attracting and addressing my target audience.

I made sure to ask very important specific questions, so that I may get the answers I was looking for, the 4 questions that I really put effort in wording where
  • What appeals to you most about thrillers?
The majority of people said that they enjoyed the fact that the
thrillers has suspense and mystery, This allowed me to address my audience by creating suspense and mystery in my product.
  • Do you prefer supernatural or reality in thrillers?
The majority of people said that they preferred if the thriller was based on a real life story, or was possible to happen in real life, because they believed that the fact that it could happen to them, would effect them more, this helped me to address my audience because I created a thriller which was based around a real life event of a young female student.

  • What gender would you want the protagonist to be?
Most of the people said  that it was unusual for them to see male protagonist to be in a thriller and they would rather enjoy it if it was a female, this information allowed me to address my audience by creating a female protagonist

  • What gender would you want your victim to be?
Majority of the people said that they wanted the victim to be a female because they would be able to sympathise with her more, because if this I decided to make my victim who is also the protagonist be a female.

These questions helped me, in the creation of my thriller due to the answers that I received from these questions I was then able to work my ideas around that, and create something that the audience would enjoy.

Two quotes from my open ended questions that helped me make key decisions to ensure that I was attracting and addressing my target audience

What appeals to you most about thrillers?

Katie, 17 said "what appeals to me most about thrillers is the fact that they allow me to escape into some other world that is so similar to mine but at the same time so different"

These questions allowed me to ensure I addressed my audience by creating a world and environment in my thriller that was somewhere which was common for people to be seen in such as the hospital.

What scares you most about thrillers?

Sam 19 said " The thing that scares me the most about thrillers is the tension and how the characters react to event''

These questions allowed me to ensure I addressed my audience by creating tension throughout the thriller and also making my character really show her emotions on the screen.

My questionnaire:

To provide me with an understanding on whether I attracted and appealed to my intended audience with my production, I carried out a focus group to get some direct feedback. My focus group consisted of members of my class and people who I knew enjoyed thriller films so their feedback would be valuable.

My focus group

I  was able to ask some of the students who attend the same sixth form as me.
Fatma, 17 said: "I really enjoyed the narrative of the thriller, as it was interesting and engaging, I actually want to know more".

Trang 16 said "I felt like the storyline should have been a bit clearer, and the protagonist should have had more dialogue".

Jimmy 18 said '' that he felt like the Reporter kind of helped him understand the story line''

Overall majority of the audience enjoyed the thriller, and felt like they could relate to it even though, they are not in the same circumstances as the main character, they felt they could relate.

The feedback overall was really helping in letting me know whether I attracted and addressed my target audience and I believe from using the feedback from my questionnaire and getting my focus group feedback, that I did.

Why was the primary research important and do I believe this helped me attract and address my target audience?
Overall I believe that the two methods of primary research I have carried out in the form of a questionnaire and the focus group  has helped me find the needs of my target audience. I have used the answers that I have received from my questionnaire to make sure that the product that I created satisfies their wants and needs from a thriller to ensure I attracted them and in regards to the focus group, it gave me critical feedback to measure my success.

Planning - Shot list - Miss Begum

Camera Shot List

The camera shot list, has every size angle and movement that we are planning to use in the production. The shot list is good because it helps the director, camera man and editor to all be in the same page and work together.

Shot list will allow the camera man to understand what is expected from him, also It gives everyone in the crew an overview of the thriller. Its also good because it allows there to be changes made if there is need of any.

Planning- Storyboarding - Miss Begum

A storyboard is an illustrated version of the film showing how the film will be directed It is made up of  images that represent each shot that will be in that film it also has notes on w what the  which is supported by important notes that include everything that will be happening  in that scene from camera angles to the character that will be in that scene. A story board is useful as it helps the film maker to plan out and be more organised and know what he's doing.

Conclusion
A storyboard is important to create before making a film as it helps you make important ideas and also give you an insight on what the film would look like.

Research- Graphs- Miss Begum

Why is it important to get and analyse feedback? Relate to direct, specific audience feedback

feedback is important to get feedback because it allows me to see peoples opinions and how they are similar to other people opinions and I am able to compare it.Once the feedback is collected  and analysed I will be able to work around the audiences ideas and interpret it into my own to create a product for that will catch the audiences attention.

Example of various graphs you have created

Conclusion: How has the research been beneficial?

The research was beneficial as it helped me to identify what the audience are expecting a my thriller production. The graphs that where made allowed me to see more into what the audience wanted.

planning-questionnaire-Miss Begum

What is the importance of primary research? Relate to direct, specific audience feedback.

Primary research means the research that you go out and collect yourself, primary research varies from surveys, questionnaires or observations. Primary is important because it allows a person to make their own research on something and create their own information around It in order that it may appeal to their target audience. Different genders and age groups may have different opinions and the Primary research will help to get to know different types of people and how their needs should be satisfied, using the product.

What is the advantage and disadvantage of  a questionnaire?
Advantage of a questionnaire
  1. Practical
  2. A great amount of information can be collected during a questionnaire by many people
  3. Its cheap
  4. A questionnaire is quick so people will most likely spend their time doing it
  5. When all the information has been collected it can be used to compare with other information also being collected through the questionnaire
Disadvantage of a questionnaire

  1. Through a questionnaire you are not able to see the persons emotions
  2. There would be a lack of explanation, so it would be hard to know what the person who answered the questionnaire might be actually saying.
  3. Lacks validity
  4. There is no way to tell how truthful the person answering is being
  5. There is no way of telling how much thought a respondent has put in it
  6. The respondent may be forgetful or not thinking within the full context of the situation
  7. People might miss out some questions which they don't understand.
Who did you ask and why?

I made sure to ask 20 people and equally shared it between genders, making sure that 10 males and 10 females got it and answered it, as I wanted to see the views of both genders I made sure to give it to people 15 and over, as that is the group that I am hoping to attract with my thriller. The responses that I got from the questionnaires allowed me to have more of an insight in the thoughts of young males and females on thrillers and their expectations on thriller films.

Examples of your questionnaire uploaded.

Conclusion

This research has been beneficial as it has helped me, to finalise my ideas on my thriller, it has helped me based on the expectations of my target audience. Thanks to my target audience I am able to make decisions that I know that my audience will enjoy.

Planning- Mise En Scene- Mr Smith

In every film production there Mise En Scene meaning that there is  a specific, reason everything

Location:
It will be located in busy hospital set in a suburban city

where:
At the beginning she is going to be set in a room, that is the hospital, the lighting will be dark as we want  the location to appear, mysterious, but then there will be a ray of light showing in other that the audience can see what Is going on and also see the characters face, and start to formulate their ideas towards the character due to what she looks like,

why: link to audience response and genre conventions
I would like for the audience to be engaged with the production and want to find out more about the characters and the reasons in why the events happening are happening. The towards the setting of the dark hospital room, is that they feelings towards the hospital is that the audience will think of sickness diseases and patients with mental problems.
The blanket that would be used is an important iconography, I want the audience to be oblivious about the significance of the blanket and what the blanket is able to do, in most films when they see a blanket you instantly think of warmth and protection, and  I want the audience to feel like that towards the blanket

Iconography:
Due to the fact that the character will be a mother she will be holding a  baby wrapped in a blanket, the blanket will be the most important iconography in the film as we are planning to show her killing the baby using the blanket.

Lighting and colour:
the lighting will be dark as we want  the location to appear, mysterious, but then there will be a ray of light showing in other that the audience can see what Is going on and also see the characters face, and start to formulate their ideas towards the character due to what she looks like. Through the production  there will be a dark background colour.

Planning- Preliminary task- Mr Smith

In our groups we have made a preliminary task which has allowed us to try out the camera and practise the use of different shots, sizes and angles.

We started the preliminary video with an over the shoulder shot of Cheila who is panicking when he find out that his business partner does not have the package that he was expecting to get. We used the over the shoulder shot because we wanted to capture his facial expressions and also make sure that the person that he was talking to was also part of the shot.

We where also able to capture a mid length shot of Cheila, where we got his waist up, but unfortunately we where not able to capture his full head. I really enjoyed this shot because it allowed us to have a closer look at Cheila the tripod really helped as it allowed to move the camera in sync with Cheilas movements.

The low angle shot was something we planned to use from the  beginning because we knew it would make Sean look powerful and dangerous as he's representing a dangerous gangsta.

High Angle shot has been used here to make Cheila look weaker than  Sean, we used the tripod to take this shot, and it really helped because it allowed us to adjust it the height we wanted to.

Whilst we where filming we encountered a number of difficulties, such as finding the right setting was  hard as there was many people walking around and a fair amount of noise. It was hard finding also the right lighting that would look right in the camera.
Whilst  editing we encountered not many difficulties, once we got the hang on how to use the software properly it was fairly easy, and straight forward.

I have learned that editing takes a fair amount of time as there is different amounts of editing techniques that you need to use.

Planning- Production Paperwork- Miss Begum

For our thriller we need  the paperwork in order to ensure that everyone within our group as well as our cast knew exactly what they where doing and what was expected of them. This also helps to clarify ideas, and also helps the group to be organised.

Production schedule:
The production schedule, is what is going on in the filming schedule. This document is to be given to everyone that is taking part in the group from the crew members to the cast members in order that they are aware of where to be and when to be there. The production schedule has to be easy to follow and understand.

Location Recce:
A location recce is a summary of all the locations that have been decided to be used for the thriller. This document needs to be given to everyone that is taking part in the thriller movie so that they know all the information about the location.

Risk assessment
A risk assessment is an analysis of  the location and it identifies all the dangers that are exposed in that location, it also shows how we will overcome all those dangers and make it a safe environment to film in. This document will be given to everyone and also as it is a legal document is will be given to the local council,

Client release form
Its a legal document, that includes the terms and agreements for all the actors that are going to be in the thriller. Everyone that's in the cast should have this document. In the client release form there should be shown an overview of all the risks that there will be.

Location release form
Location release document that discusses the terms and agreements for the company/council/people about the allowance to film in that area. This document is to be given to the council and all the people in the crew and cast to show

Planning- Production Roles- Miss Begum

                                                        Production Roles

The film industry consist of more than just a bunch of actors it consist of people who do most of the work behind the scenes.

1. Camera operator
The camera operator is in charge of how the scenes will be filmed, by operating the camera angle to capture the shots, angles and sizes. The camera operator will have to work alongside the maker of the storyboard in other to create the perfect scene. The person in my group that will be taking this role will be Josh he will be taking the role as camera operator because he has had practise and experience behind the camera in the past which have led him to cultivate skills that will be useful for the making of our film.

2. The Producer
In the film Hierarchy the Producer is lower that the Director, but still important, the producer assist the director into making decisions. The producer runs around the sets making sure that everything is in the right place and that everything has been taken care of. And that people are ready to start filming. The role of producer will be taken by me as I have the right skills needed to direct, also due to my persona I think that I will fulfil the roles, and because of my job as the director I will also be able to stay hand in hand with both of my roles as they complement each other well.

3. The director
In the film industry there is a very important role, which is the director. The director is in charge of everything, he/she finalises the decisions that are made. Also the director  controls how the scene is shot and what's in the scene and who is in the scene. the role of director will be taken by me also because I have the right skills to direct a film, due to my previous experiences I have accumulated skills that will help me with the direct also I am a particularly loud person so I will make sure that my production team hears me and listens to me when I'm making changes or decisions.

4. The lights operator
When shooting a scene in a thriller movie the lighting is everything, the lighting can change the meaning of a scene, to take care of the lighting there is a lights operator, who is in charge of the lights and what lighting is appropriate for what scene.  Sheila will be taking the role as the light operator as he has had previous experience working as a light operator.

5. Location
The setting can make or break a film, the setting has to be appropriate and has to work hand in hand with the lighting and sound, the Location manager is the one that makes the effort to go out and search for the perfect setting for the movie, the location manager also makes sure that the government or the council is allowing them to use the location needed. Josh will be taking the role of the location manager as he knows most of the spots around this area.

6. Hair, Makeup and costume
The hair, makeup and costume team make sure that the actor look the appropriate part for their characters. As the only female in my group I will take the role of hair, makeup and costume also I have had previous experience in the past doing peoples hair and makeup and also I have an interest in clothes and fashion and will be able to dress the actors appropriately to their roles.

7. Story boarder
The story boarder comes up with the original ideas of what the scene should look like and what camera shots and angles should be used in the scene. The storyboarded works alongside the camera operator to make sure that the scenes include everything that is needed. The role of the story boarder will be taken by Sheila due to his drawing skills.

8. Editor
The editor is responsible for making sure that the movie turns out exactly as planned, the editors takes care of all the bad shooting and also makes sure that all the shootings that where previously taken are put all together as one. The editor role will be taken by Josh due to his previous experience with editing, which has allowed him to gain skills that will be useful when editing our film.

9. Sound technician
The sound Technician is in charge of the sound and is responsible for removing or adding the sound that is needed in the scene. the sound technician will be Sheila due to Sheila's computer skills he will be able to work with the sound that will be needed in the film.

Conclusion
In conclusion, learning all these roles and assigning them, has been beneficial because it allows the group to be organized. Also we are now able to understand what our roles consist of and what we can do to assist the rest of our group.

Research- Age Certificates- Miss Begum

What is the role of the BBFC and why are they important to the film industry?

The BBFC is the shorten version of  British Board of Film Classification, they are  highly expert and experiences regulator in films. They provide protection for the viewers, especially children and they protect them from disturbing images which might raise their risks. They also provide information for parents alerting them on the harms of the movie, so that they make right choices on viewing the films.

They also play the part as they judge films and decided whether the films are suitable to be released in the cinemas or not. they also give the films the perfect ratings such as U,PG,15,12,12A,18, they report scenes that are inappropriate to the audience and get the producers to cut those scenes or just banned the films completely.

what are the different age certificates?

Annabelle (2014) Poster    15

Frozen (2013) Poster PG

High School Musical (2006) Poster U

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) Poster   18

Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014) Poster 12A

The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud (2010) Poster 12

Spiderman was originally rated a PG but then Parents started complaining that the film was too violent for their kids as spiderman had a very controversial narrative. due to this the BBFC then decided to change the rating from PG to 12A, which meant that those under 12 could only watch it if they where with an adult.

what age certificates to thrillers seem to get and why?

The age certificates that thrillers tend to get are 15 and above because they usually contain disturbing scenes, violence, sexual acts that people under 15 will not be able to digest or watch. But even though the rating is 15 what is shown is still limited compare to what would we shown if the movie was an 18 plus, 15 would contain a bit of inappropriate language,  not much sexual content, and  not much shown on the abuse of drugs. Even for those 18 and over there is still limited content shown, due to the capability of what a human could tolerate.

What Age Certificate would you give your thriller?
For my thriller I would give it a 15

Conclusion
The research that is shown above has helped me, understand more about Age certificates and how they work. in my own thriller I would need to consider what I would put in it and if it would be appropriate for my 15 plus viewers.

Reaserh- Narative Themes- Miss Begum

What are themes? why are they important to identify for the audience?

Themes are the topics within a film, that create meaning and understanding In a movie For example love and obsession are two themes, it helps the audience to understand the description and understand what the movie is about.

How are themes dependant on genres and why?

Themes are important and depends on other genres because it allows the viewers to see what is the main theme within the film. This allows the viewers to feel the emotions related to that film and feel sympathy towards what the character is going through. This also helps the viewer relate and understand the character. without themes there would be confusion and lack of understanding on the the events happening.

Common themes in Thrillers

  • Death

  • Obsession

Black Swan (2010) Poster

  • Revenge
Taken (2008) Poster

  • Love

  • Religion

Se7en (1995) Poster

These are all examples of common themes in thrillers

All themes have a positive impact on the audience as it allows the audience to understand the thriller more.

Conclusions
In my thriller I will use the theme of pain and hurt because I believe its what would go with my subgenre which would be psychological thriller

Research- Narrative Theory- Miss Begum

what is a narrative and why is important?

A narrative is a storyline that is used and followed throughout a film. A narrative is everything that happens in the films it is there to create more meaning towards the audience, a narrative should be easy to follow by the audience and shouldn't be confusing unless its deliberate.

Creating meaning in text
  1. The connotation and denotation help create meaning it allows the audience to give true meaning of a scene, object or emotion towards the viewers.
  2. Genre  shows how conventional it is and what makes it conventional genre-wise.
  3. The structure would allows the audience to understand the whole film from the start, middle and end without getting confused in the middle.
  4. The characters allow to give the audience meaning of the narrative and have more understanding.
who was Propp?

Propp is a theorist that came up with an idea of creating a film with a narrative that was determined by the characters he believe that folk tales were about the same basic struggles therefore had the same characters.

Propp characters:
  •  The hero
  •  The villain
  •  The donor
  • The dispatcher
  • The false hero
  • The helper
  •  The princess
  • Her father (the king)

Who is Todorov?

Todorov is another theorist that came up with an idea of creating a film with a narrative that have a clear structure of a start, middle and end which he named equilibrium ( how the characters are stable at the beginning) , disequilibrium ( something bad happens then a change happens which needs to be cured)  and new equilibrium. ( the change gets solved and the narrative is closed)

  Who is Aristotle?

Aristotle is another theorist that like Tovodo came up with the idea that a narrative should have the beginning, middle and ending, he also believed that all the events should somehow relate to eachother. He also believed that it was important to get emotion from the audience.

 Who was Barthes?
Barthes is also a  theorist that came up with an idea of narrative that can be explained by using these 5 things ...
1. Action - understanding and resolution.
2. Enigma - it presents a problem or dilemma to the audience that needs to be solved
3. Symbolic - connotation
4. Semic - denotation
5. cultural understanding - events that happen that people recognise as being part of a culture

I believe that Thrillers tend to take Torovs theory because it has a clear equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium. This is Important because it helps the audience to understand clearly what is going on and follow the narrative without getting confused

Conclusion

All the research above has helped me understand clearly about Narratives and the Theorists view on what a narrative should look like. In my film I will use the narrative of Todorov as its clear and will keep my viewers engaged with the film.

Reaserch- Mise En Scene;setting and iconograhy- Miss Begum

what are setting and iconography and why is it an important convention? How can it help with an audience understanding?

Setting- Setting would be the place or type of surroundings where the film would take place. setting is an important convention because it creates a lot of different connotations, meaning feelings and denotations based on the setting, such as the location and how it looks. For example If a movie was to be set in an abandoned house, this would make the audience understand the kind of genre it is and make the audience have different connotations  just by looking at the surroundings. This would help the audience to in a way be prepared for what would happen next and have different ideas and thoughts roaming through their mind, even though the denotation of it is just an abandoned house.

Iconography- Iconography is known as the object or prop used in the scene, it causes meaning to the scene. iconography is an important convention to thriller because it assists into creating different connotations and denotations in Thrillers.Iconography is the objects that cause significant to the scene. an example would be if the protagonist was holding a gun this would make the audience understand the intentions and actions of the protagonist, and the connotations would be murder. Due to this iconography the audience would be expecting something bad to happen in the future whilst  that specific iconography is in the scene, such as the murder of someone etc. this would help to create tension towards the audience as they will be expecting to see something  bad to happen even though the denotation of it is just a gun.

Settings- what are the typical thriller settings and why?
The typical thriller settings would be...
  • An old abandoned house- The connotations coming from the viewers would be haunted, isolated, spirits and ghosts, due to the connotations that would come from the audience it would help create fear towards the audience and keep them alert and also make them feel uncomfortable. this will also cause the audience to have bad ideas about the future of that film like something would happen. but when looking at it from the denotation  point of view it would just be an old abandoned house.
  • An isolated  Forest, the connotations from the audience of this location would be scary, mysterious, dangerous. This would helps to make the audience to make different ideas on their mind and think of all the bad things that could possibly happen in this place such as murder, rape, kidnapping. this would create a frightening response from the audience. but denotations wise it would only be an isolated forest .

Setting and sub-genres
Setting would also be picked due on the sub-genre of the film so that it would make sense to the film

action thriller
In action thrillers the settings would be suburban areas, roads, banks, underground etc....

Crime Thrillers
would be set I suburban areas, city, banks, hospitals, run down areas etc...

sci-fi thrillers
spaceships, forests, hospitals, laboratories, etc...

psychological thrillers
someone's house, hospital,alleyways etc...

Analyse a scene

The scene that I am going to analyse would be the fighting scene between batman and bane on what seems like their first encounter on The dark knight rises, In this scene we can see that it is being set in what looks like an underground area, making the viewer feel aware of all the dangers that could happen underground such as murder, the setting already would create an alert response from the audience the connotations from the audience would be murder, kidnapping etc. The iconography that is mostly being shown is the gun that the guards are holding which would bring tension from the audience automatically making them think that something bad is going to happen such as someone getting shot, but as we know the denotation is just the gun.

Conclusion
 - All the information and research above has helped me to develop an understanding of how setting and iconography could creates different connotations and denotations towards the audience. The type of setting I'm planning to use are street, houses, and if im able alleyways. the type of iconography that I want to use would be blood and some kind of weapons.
