What is lighting
and colour and why is it an important convention?
Lighting helps convey the mood and atmosphere. It can be used
to guide the audience’s attention to a particular object, person, emotion or
gesture. Lighting is very important because it creates more meaning than we
actually think.
Angles of
Lighting- there are 3 angles of lighting that are very important
1.
Under Lighting: when the lighting comes from
below the person. This tends to have a distancing effect on the character
2.
Top Lighting: Light comes from above
highlighting the features of the character creates glamour look
3.
Back Lighting: light comes from the back,
creates a siluate
Types of lighting-
there are 2 very important types of lighting
1. Low-key lighting: where the lighting is dark
with small areas of light which also creates a shadow this mostly gets used in
Physiological thriller and Crime thrillers
2.
High-key
lighting: when the lighting appears more natural and realistic to the eyes this
mostly gets used in action thrillers and sci-fi thrillers.
What type of
lighting is conventional in thrillers and why?
The type of lighting that is conventional in thrillers is
under lighting and back lighting which they tends to give the character a more
mysterious look and also it allows the audience to be on their guard when it
comes to that specific character, also the same would go for low-key lighting.
Colour in scenes
Colour in scenes have different connotations to them and can
give different interpretations of the scene, for example the colour red in
thriller can signify hate, love which could sometimes lead to stalking or
danger in most cases. Also the colour green could signify the envy, jealousy
and have something to do with sci-fi.
What type of colour conventions are in thrillers and why?
In thriller convention the type of colours that there are,
are dark colours such as black and grey, but also thrillers might include red
and green and other colours that are not necessarily bright. These colours
would be used because they might be good to the scene and movie as It will give
the viewers an interpretation of the movie.
Thriller scene
analysis
I analysed the se7en bar seen, where David and the detective are talking, the lighting at first the lighting comes from the back o f the detective but then there's also a lighting coming from the front so it gives it a bit of a siluate but also the front lighting allows the audience to see the face so in a way it adds a bit of mystery to the character but at the same time makes the audience focus on the characters expressions. 2.49 minutes in we see some low-key lighting going on which allows some the lighting to be shows but only allows the viewer to focus on David
Conclusion: what type
of lighting and colour are you planning to use and why?
I think in my movie I am planning to use under lighting and back lighting, because I want to give my characters a mysterious effect and also low-key lighting because I am planning to make my movie psychological and low key lighting creates shadows which will make the viewer think.
Terms of lighting defined well.
ReplyDeleteTo improve;
-provide thriller images per lighting angle and type
-in 'Seven' analysis, use PEER structure and identify the use of lighting. Why has is been used and why is it conventional of the thriller genre. Need to use key terms here too
